Every year around Christmas time, people ask the question: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? It’s a question that’s been debated for decades, and there are die hard fans on both sides of the argument. Some people say it should be on their Christmas movie list, but others say it’s not the holiday classic everyone thinks it is. Why is Die Hard a Christmas movie? The movie takes place on Christmas Eve, the entire storyline takes place at a Christmas party and Bruce Willis is fighting terrorists at Nakatomi Plaza. Christmas songs such as “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! ” and “Christmas in Hollis” are featured on the soundtrack. It’s about a man struggling to get back together with his wife on Christmas Eve which makes it more emotional and Christmas-y. There are so many reasons why people call it a Christmas movie, fighting bad guys, family, togetherness and Christmas films.
On the other hand, there are those who disagree that Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. Critics point out that the film is more focused on action and suspense than Christmas cheer. Bruce Willis himself has said, ‘Die Hard is not a Christmas movie, ’ and rightly so, as the film is more of an action thriller than a holiday classic. There are no sleigh rides or tearjerking scenes by a Christmas tree, just gunplay and explosions. The holiday setting contrasts with the sentimentality of traditional Christmas movies.
But if you ask why is Die Hard a Christmas movie, the answer is that it’s about Christmas and it’s a Christmas movie for some. Although there are many reviews that say Die Hard is not a Christmas movie, it has a different take on holiday cheer and McClane’s adventure represents the holidays: facing your fears and fighting for what you believe in. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? It depends on your outlook. Some love its non-traditional holiday cheer, while others prefer more cozy and lighthearted Christmas movies.
Ultimately, though, Die Hard has cemented itself in the holiday canon, and whether or not it’s a Christmas movie it’s certainly one that gets brought up every December. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
